One-Day Dentistry for Tooth Restoration
Q&A with Barry Rozenberg, D.D.S.

IMAGE: What exactly is the Sirona Cerec AC Bluecam?

Dr. Rozenberg: This is an in-office system that enables the dentist to take a "Digital Impression" using an intra-oral camera (blueRay video) instead of loading the mouth with impression material. The dentist will then design the restoration in the computer and send that information to our in-office milling machine, where the restoration is then milled out of a solid block of porcelain. This enables us to deliver the restoration at the same visit. Cerec can easily treat up to 4 restorations in the same quadrant at the same visit.

IM: What dental issues can be treated using this new technology?

Dr. R: Cerec is not only for full-coverage restorations (crowns), but allows the dentist to design more conservative restoration like onlays and inlays, which require less tooth preparation. Even simple composite "fillings" can be milled for a more durable restoration.

IM: What benefits does it offer both the dentist and the patient?

Dr. R: There are many benefits to the Cerec Bluecam. It is a clean and painless process - there are no gagging, messy impressions. What was done in three visits is now done in one, and marginal fit is superior because we eliminate the impressions and all the laboratory procedures that cause processing errors. The patient is also leaving with the final restoration completed, and not with a temporary restoration that at times falls out and necessitates coming back to the office to be re-cemented.

IM: What is the process? What can a patient expect during a visit using this equipment

Dr. R: The whole process is just under 2 hours from start to finish. The patient as always is given a local anesthetic, and then the teeth are prepared. First, the doctor dries off your teeth, then places a dry triangle against the inner cheek of mouth to ensure dryness and applies a light coat of opti spray.

The camera is activated and a "Blue Ray" image is taken. The model is displayed on the HD screen beginning from the back of the mouth. Patients are in awe at the advanced technology as they are able to watch the entire progression of events. They can then entertain themselves for about 40 minutes (our office offers the use of our computers or TVs to our patients). After the restoration is milled it is custom stained and glazed, then permanently bonded to the tooth preparation. For bigger jobs, the dentist can send the results directly to their lab of choice.

IM: Is it painful or uncomfortable?

Dr. R: The whole process is actually more comfortable because we have eliminated the impression taking and temporary crown problems altogether.

IM: What about cost? Is it much more expensive than the old-fashioned treatment? Is it covered by insurance?

Dr. R: The fees are the same, except when we are doing more than one restoration simultaneously. Then we can offer our patients a discount because we are saving time.

IM: Are there any drawbacks to this treatment option?

Dr. R: There are no draw backs - only positives. This is a new era in dentistry. The tooth is made in a controlled environment, and digital optics are so refined that the end result is a perfect tooth with the perfect spacing. In addition, it is much less time consuming, as the patient does not need to take additional time off from work for added dental appointments.

IM: Do most dental offices have the Bluecam?

Dr. R: Most dental offices do not have this new technology. Either they are not on the cutting edge, or they are not ready to invest $150,000 in this equipment. IMAGE
